Normal vaginal discharge is composed of secretions from several glands within the vagina,exfoliative cells from the
vagina and cervix,cervical mucus, uterine tube,endometrial fluids, normal flora and metabolites.The amount and
composition of vaginal discharge are inconsistent and are affected by hormones.
That is, the discharge quantity increases in the middle of the menstrual cycle but this change does not occur when a
person takes contraceptive pills.
There are normally about six types of bacteria in the normal flora that exists within the vagina,in which lactobacillus is the
majority. The survival of these bacteria is influenced by the vaginal acidity (pH) and availability of glucose.
The normal vaginal acidity is pH4.5 or less which is maintained by lactic acid.In general, the vaginal epithelial cell
contains much glycogen due to female hormoned which are decomposed by lactobacillus to produce latic acid.
Thus,when the vaginal acidity becomes abnormal and metabolic disorders occur,the number of mormal flora decreases
leading to vaginitis. The increase of inflammatory cells may bring changes in the color and viscosity of vaginal discharge
and cause a foul smell.
One of the reasons that the acidity within the vagina ca change is usin alkaline soap to cleanse the vagina.
You should use a woman's cleanser that sets the pH balance within the vagina as slightly acidic,that is less irritable and
does no have any allergic effects. |

Abnormal vaginal discharge,also called as leukorrhea, is composed of various substances such as sebaceous glands in
the external reproductive orga (pudendum) region,mucus excreted from the Bartholin gland,and small amounts of mucus
from the cervix.
If the amount of this discharge becomes excessive or gradually increases, or ifblood is mixed in the discharge,it should
not be ignored.Cases with seriously bad smells or an itching sensation should also be treated right away.However,all
case s of leukorrhea or vaginal dis charge cannot be considered as a disease.
Vaginal discharge is normal,but its frequency and amount differs among individuals. Therefore,it is difficult to determine a
normal range or degree of discharge.However,in most cases,discharge does not lead to andy medical problems.
The mucus viscosity of vaginal discharge (leukorrhea) may also differ depending on the menstrual cycle,It may be more
glutinous during the ovulatory phase.
The most characteristic symptom of vaginitis is leukorrhea.Normal vaginal discharge is white-colored and may be slightly
smeared on the underwear.During the ovulatory phase, the discharge amount increases and becomes gluey.As for the
appearance of vaginal discharge in vaginitis,the color is dark,large in quantity and has a fish-like odor.
Vaginitis can be divided into bacterial vaginosis,Candida vaginitis,and trichomonas vaginitis. |

Bacterial vaginosis occurs because of anaerobic bacteria.Causes of bacterial
vaginosis can include frequent sexual intercourse, use of tampons, and wrongful
viginal cleansing.Its symptoms are pruritis,unpleasant odor from the purulent
discharge,and dyspareunia.
This may be treated with antibiotics but recurs often. |

This is caused from being infected by trichomonas,a protozoan with a tail.
It frequently occurs in women with vaginitis symptoms.Trichomonas
vaginitis can be spread through sexual intercourse and is considered as a
highly contagious sexually transmitted disease.The characteristic symptom
of trichomnas vaginitis is yellow,foamy,malodorus viginal discharge.
Other symptoms include vainal pruitis,pudendal pain or dyspareunia.
If trichomonas vaginitis is left untreated,complication such as pelvic
inflammatory disease,infertilty,and bacterial vaginitis may occur.
Appropriate treatment must be done with metronidazole.The sexual partner
must also receive treatment in order to prevent reinfection.Condoms can be
used for prevention. |

This is a very common type of vaginitis caused by a fungus called Candida
albicans.
About 75% of women get infected at least once during her lifetime.Candida
vaginitis mostly occurs when the immunity level falls.Causes of this disease
include pregnancy,diabetes,long term administration of steroid medication, and
oral contraceptives.Symptoms are cheese-like discharge,pruritis,dyspareunia, and
painful urination.It can be treated with antifungal agents.
The latent period of this disease is unleclear and a small amount of odorless,thick
(cheese-like) vaginal discharge can be observed.Edema and erythemain the labia
majora and pudendal region may be seen as well.White discharge sticking onto
the inner side of labia minora is the characterisitc smptom.
Inorder to prevent candida vagnitis, the pudendal area must be kept clean and
tight clothes should be avoided.
